The main way we help patients with gum disease is a lot of it is recognition. They don't realize that they have a problem because they're not having any pain. They might have a little bleeding and that's typical gum disease. Most people don't realize it. When they come in and we can show them on an x-ray, in a photo, what gum disease looks like and what healthy gums look like, they get so motivated that they wanna know, "Can I get that Waterpik? What toothbrush do you recommend? What do I gotta do to keep them nice and clean? " Because you know what? Nobody wants bone loss. If you keep your teeth clean you will not lose your bone and you'll have your teeth for life.
Diagnosing & Treating Your Gum Disease
During your dental exam, we’ll check to see if there are any gaps between your teeth and your gums. These are called periodontal pockets. Bacteria can fester in these pockets. If you have pockets, we’ll measure them to see how severe your gum disease is and discuss a treatment plan.Loretta T. on Dr. Roeder saving her gums Read Transcript
I think the majority of my issues have always been my teeth. He's done root canals for me. I clamp my teeth at night. This was definitely misdiagnosed by the previous dentist, because my gums were receding. This previous dentist actually told me that it was because I was brushing incorrectly. But, when I came to Dr. Roeder, he said, "No. You're clamping and it's making your gums recede. So, he had to put in some filling all around my gums to help to protect them, and also give me an appliance for that. It absolutely helps. There's no doubt about it. I understand that I have to discipline myself to use it every night.
He is state-of-the-art. He is constantly refreshing, and going to school. He definitely brings his own employees. He sends them to school, as well. He is experienced. How many years has he been doing this? He really is an experienced doctor. He's not the cheapest guy on the block, but you'll always know that you're going to get a professional job when you leave.
A great gum disease preventive measure is daily flossing. If that fails, we’ll move on to nonsurgical gum disease treatment: scaling and root planing. This treatment involves smoothing out the roots of your teeth so bacteria has nothing to cling to, as well as cleaning out all the bacteria in your dental pockets to encourage your gums and your teeth to close up the space between them.
If your gum disease is severe or the roots of your teeth are exposed, Dr. Roeder, a graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry, can treat you for gum recession. Our dental office was hand-selected to offer the new pain-free method of gum recession treatment called the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique.
